Hansel and Gretel (I Guess)
Hansel and Gretel (I Guess) was a month long endeavor to animate a fairy tale of my choosing over the course of 45 seconds.
Early Designs
‘Hansel and Gretel (I Guess)’ came after Hickory Dickory Dock, and I must admit, I really liked the rodent designs I had settled on before. I just thought it was a cute idea and might be more appealing to kids, using anthropomorphic animals.
A few specific traits of my designs took inspiration from other places.
The designs of the woodman was based on equal parts of the Rat from my Hickory Dickory Dock animation, and the charcter Frankie Waterson from The Amazing World of Gumball
The design of the mother was very loosely based on that of The Beldam from Coraline.
The witches features are in reference to the design I created for a character known as ‘mouse’
And the roof of cake was designed after the Minecraft cake texture.
Design Trivia
R&D
I went to Pinterest to do some research. This imagery falls under the distinction of ‘fanart’ meaning that most of the designs were consistent, particularly with their clothing designs, which was Important for me to get right. I also went back to read through the original Hansel and Gretel story, wherein I found a verse taken out of most iterations of the story, where the children are compared to mice. This cemented my decision to keep them as they were.
Final Version
If theres anything negative to say about the final version of my story, its that the interior of the witches house wasn’t everything I wanted it to be. I plan on going back to finish it at some point in the near future. But i was very happy about the abrupt ending I gave the short film, where the kids set fire to the house and run away to find another.
