Over the past year or two, I have gone on long winded monologues to answer questions of my thesis, covering the concept of an animated multiverse.
This is one of those monologues, directed at an anonymous colleague.

The Suspended Animation Question

Context: My Colleague and I were reacting to a promotional video for the reboot of a series called “The Amazing World of Gumball“. During the promotional video, the main characters awake, with their entire world covered in a heavy layer of dust, as if they had slept through the entire seven year period between the original shows run and the release of this video.

Whinot:
I gotta update the suspended animation notes of my thesis…

Colleague:
HAHA! THEY ARE BACK

Whinot:
Why now?
How does the suspension work?
HOW did it stop?
And how is it ALL the fault of 1 character.
Rob is a special case, he falls in the line up of the smallest collective of characters in animation history. Those who have seen beyond the 4th wall. That brings up even MORE questions Like the final episode before cancelation. How did he KNOW it was the last episode. How did he gain control over the universes laws of physics in an attempt to change the shows internal dynamic and escape to another reality? Especially in one of the single most active and sentient universes in animation history.
What if it’s just pressing Coyotes Law to it’s limits, acknowledging the physics and attributes of the universe to the extend that you actively force it to stabilize within a new set of laws, like a stealth based hostile takeover of another country, warping things from the inside out.
The entire world went into suspended animation. Why was rob pulled back into the dictionary in the final moments before cancelation…

Colleague:
Couldn’t say.

Context: This question lingered for quite some time, and other discussions were held after this response. It was multiple months before I reopened the discussion to be continued.

Whinot:
What if sentience can be shut off…
In the rare occurrence of suspended animation taking place within the scope of an episode, it’s almost never the main characters, WHICH, would lead to the idea that ONLY main characters are the ones with real sentience and sapience. It makes sense, they’re the universes primary, the universes instinct is to keep the show going to prolong its cancelation, it controls other characters such as the species ive labeled ”Catalysts”, so what if ALL non primary main characters are just catalysts. It WOULD make sense! Except for the fact it wouldn’t account for when a show is on hiatus, canceled and brought back, and almost always stuck into suspended animation. So what if ALL the real characters in a universe have independence, but it can be shut off, like flicking a switch?

In Rick and Morty when it’s discovered theres “Kind of a heaven”, what they actually stumble across is their universes visual interpretation of Suspended animation. Death. It’s the removal of a character from the central area of its universe, relocated to a place held WITHIN a universes dictionary! Not just shoved back into a holding cell like a prop, but in stasis like an astronaut in hibernated sleep, frozen in time until the plot has use for them again! It’s suspended animation!
When someone dies, it’s not because of someone else, that SOMEONE ELSE was just a catalyst for a canon event. Their time was destined to be up. Their story was over, or they’re no longer relevant to the plot, which itself is the inciting event for something in someone else’s plot! Ever growing balance of the universe!
The actions of a universes ultimate ruler, a GOD! Regardless of what form it takes in a universe, if it even takes a form at all! For adventure time, it’s Prismo and all of his coworkers. For Phineas and Ferb, it’s the “Mysterious Force” Candice is always at odds with! It’s just DEATH! The “termination” of the host body, and passing of the soul, to a higher plane of reality where it continues to exist for future events!!!

THATS THE SUSPENDED ANIMATION ANSWER!

Context: After this long winded response, my Colleague responds with a simple thumbs up GIF.

Whinot:
DONT YOU GIF ME AS IF THAT ISN’T PROFOUNDLY AND PHILOSOPHICALLY DEEP AS HECK!

Colleague:
It is lol
