Classical Whinot

Classical Whinot is an attempt to eliminate any distinction between a photoshop canvas and a physical canvas. By utilizing a variety of layers and brush styles, this depiction of an illustrative cartoon character can be transformed into a work of art akin to the renaissance

Introduction

Whenever i’m not sure what to create, I draw myself. Whinot Toonish is my stand in, and is modeled after the style of classic rubber hose toons. I wanted to use as many brushes as i could, to create a detailed masterpiece that looked like it had been physically painted on canvas. I took inspiration from the classical victorian era portraiture which captured its subject in finery. In the end i succeeded in creating a marvelous masterpiece, blending cartoonish ways with reality. This is the culmination of around 22 hours of work in total, on and off for two and a half weeks.

Visual Research

I started off my doing some visual research. I wanted to capture two esthetics in my illustration. One was the classical style of renaissance portraiture. This, strangely enough, I got from studying meme art of cats photoshopped into this style. It gave me a good sense of exaggerated proportions and unique design that I felt was necessary for doing the same thing for a cartoon character. It was also just hard to stop searching for them once they started showing up.

The second was the classic and dapper style of the 1920’s. Seeing as I was creating a portrait for a character who was designed to be a classic ‘toon, I wanted to really capture the fashion sense that was most popular at the start of rubber hose animation.

The Close Ups

The most entertaining part of creating Classical Whinot, was the intense amounts of detail I put into every square inch of the piece. I wanted to really find a way to combine realism, with classic cartoon design, adding shines and shadows wherever I could to make things pop.

Final Piece

I consider ‘Classical Whinot’ my masterpiece of illustration. Two long weeks of work fully paid off, in not only a piece I can call truly finished, but a proven testament of my skills in Photoshop.
